Meet Your Teacher:

Ms. Melissa Mata

Picture of teacher

Hi! I’m Ms. Melissa Mata, the owner of HoneyBee Blessings Homeschool Hive. For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamed of being a teacher.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a master’s degree in Educational Policy from Arizona State University. I bring over 20 years of teaching experience, including 7 years as a classroom teacher in the public and charter K-8 school systems. I’m passionate about creating a nurturing and engaging environment where children learn through inquiry- and play-based activities, all rooted in the love of Jesus.

When I’m not teaching, I enjoy road trips, organizing, and finding great deals to share with others.

Now, I get the joy of teaching your child—and I truly can’t wait to learn and grow together!

Top 10 Reasons You'll Love Us

Check Out Our Premier Program!

#1: We’re a Family!

We want to get to know your family, so please invite your whole family to attend our free fun family events all year long: 4th of July Parade, Meet ‘n Greet, Photo Booths, Fall Carnival, Thanksgiving Food Drive, Christmas Party, and Spring Fever Fun Run. You are always welcome to volunteer in our classroom and/or at any of our events.

#2: We Care About You!

Our friendly manner of open communication helps you feel wanted, needed, and appreciated. Our warm, home-like atmosphere sets the standard for how you’ll feel treated as we quickly address your questions and concerns. We can't wait to get to know you better at our Meet 'n Greet before school starts!

#3: Authentic Bible Learning

The Christian faith is woven into our day through joyful, age-appropriate Bible learning. Each week, we explore God’s love through the Minno Laugh and Grow Bible stories, paired with hands-on activities, crafts, and discussions that help children understand and apply what they learn. Our monthly themes connect to our key verse, Luke 10:27, guiding children to love God and love others through kindness, empathy, and everyday actions as their hearts and character grow alongside their learning.

#4: Your Child will Make Close Friends!

Our small classes of 5 to 10 children allow your child to be comfortable and grow valuable friendships with the other students and the teacher. Because conflict-resolution skills are super vital to learn at this age, we help your child work through their problems with other children. Pretty soon, they’re using the same strategies and words we’ve taught them, all by themselves!

#5: Your child will have individualized attention

Your child will receive individualized instruction through our thorough assessments and curriculum. Our teachers will guide your child in the areas they need to improve, and challenge them when they’re ready for more. Our balance of teacher-directed and child-initiated hands-on activities follows the NAEYC guidelines to strengthen your whole child’s development: Social, Emotional, Cognitive, Language, and Physical.

#6: We keep your child healthy & safe!

Teaching children is a huge responsibility, and we take that responsibility seriously! Not only are we state licensed and CPR/1st Aid Certified, but our distinct policies and procedures regarding health and safety help to keep your child in a safe, clean environment. We’re constantly cleaning, washing hands, and monitoring all activities to prevent any accidents.

#7: We teach critical thinking in everything we do!

We intentionally teach strong thinking habits—such as persistence, problem-solving, reflection, and flexible thinking—so students become confident, independent learners. We use research-based frameworks like Habits of Mind, inquiry learning, and growth mindset to teach reading, math, science and social skills.

#8: All of our events are free!

To extend our learning we go on several field trips each year, and you get to join your child on them. We’ve gone to places like: the Zoo, Science Museum, Police Station, Fire Station, Botanical Gardens, IDEA Museum, Aquarium, Pumpkin Patch, and more! We’ll also celebrate special occasions with parties for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, and your child’s birthday!

#9: We help you preserve memories!

We offer you the opportunity to enrich your school experience by enjoying personalized t-shirts, book orders, school and class pictures, and end-of-the-year graduation photos and video.

#10: We celebrate with graduation!

Bring your entire family to our yearly graduation where we celebrate your child's accomplishments in a big way! It'll be a night to remember! Your child will graduate every year, so be sure to bring your entire family for a fun family experience for free!

FAQ's

What is your teaching philosophy?

We follow a “whole child” philosophy, partnering closely with families to nurture each child’s social, emotional, cognitive, language, and physical development. Our approach combines inquiry-based learning, hands-on exploration, and meaningful play with thoughtful direct instruction, enabling students to develop curiosity, confidence, and effective problem-solving skills. Guided by the Habits of Mind, we encourage children to think critically, persist through challenges, ask questions, and become thoughtful, independent learners.

We use a mastery-based approach, focusing on each child’s individual growth and understanding so every learner is supported and prepared for long-term success. We tailor lessons to students' individual interests to increase buy-in and foster a love of learning.

What are your Christian core beliefs?

My Christian faith shapes both my life and the heart behind HoneyBee Blessings. It is often described as evangelical, charismatic, and non-denominational. For families who would like a deeper understanding of the beliefs that align with my personal faith, you’re welcome to explore the World Challenge website for additional context. Please note that this organization is shared for reference only and has no official affiliation with the preschool.

What is Pre-K/Kindergarten?

Our Homeschool Kindergarten class blends inquiry- and play-based learning with just the right amount of focused instruction to help young learners grow with confidence. Children explore hands-on learning stations and participate in short direct-instruction lessons for core subjects. In our classes, we will be supporting mathematical thinking and building strong literacy skills through our different curricula.

What opportunities are there on Exploration Fridays?

Fridays are dedicated to real-life exploration opportunities to spark curiosity and creativity that complement our science and social studies learning (e.g., Lowell Observatory, Meteor Crater, MCC Planetarium, Phoenix Symphony, Ballet AZ, Reigning Grace Ranch, AZ Museum of Natural History, Kartchner Caverns, etc

What curricula will you use?

All in-person classes will follow along with the lessons of the week from each curriculum; however, we will not focus on completing the workbook in class. We will be extending learning through multiple opportunities for application and discussion. If you would like assistance with the daily lessons, our online classes are a great addition to your experience!

When should I call to register my child?

It’s never too early to call, so call as soon as you even think about registering, because our classes fill up ridiculously fast!

When do your classes begin? Can I enroll mid-year?

We have a 10-month school year, beginning August 10th. If spots are available, you can enroll mid-year. Please call us to see if we have any spots available.

How old does my child need to be to attend?

The preschool/kindergarten class is for kids who are 4 to 5 years old by Sep 1st, and the kindergarten/1st-grade class is for kids who are 5 to 6 years old by Sep 1st.

Does my child have to be potty-trained?

Yes.  If you have any questions about whether or not your child is ready, feel free to give us a call.  We even have a “How To Potty Train” your child handout we can give you.  It’s helped many preschool moms quickly potty train their kids.  We are here to help!

Do you take ESA Funds?

Yes, we are registered through ClassWallet. Tuition will be billed quarterly:

$1,125 per quarter for Preschool & Kindergarten

$1,500 per quarter for 1st Grade

If you enroll after the school year begins, tuition will be prorated based on your student’s first day of attendance.

Are there additional fees during the year?

No.  Your registration fee covers all your child’s supplies and reserves a spot in our program.  Your child won’t pay anything to attend our field trips and activities. Your child will also receive, at no extra cost: a preschool shirt to wear on Spirit Day and a graduation portfolio!

What if my child has food restrictions?

No worries.  Several of our students have food intolerances or severe allergies.  We ask these families to bring in their own snacks, and we create nut-free classrooms any time a child’s allergy is severe enough to require an epi pen.

Is the registration fee or tuition refundable?

No. Students may withdraw at any time; however, the registration fee and tuition for the current quarter are non-refundable.

How many students do you have per class?

We have the smallest class sizes in town, so your child gets lots of 1-on-1 time. We only have 5-10 students per class, while maintaining a 1:6 teacher-student ratio.

How do I register my child?

Follow our simple 3-step process below to register your child into our preschool!
